Alfa Corse Racing Drivers, Ignazio Giunti, Nanni Galli and Geki Russo, asked Francesco Liberto, the Master Shoemaker in Cefalu, to create the very first pair of shoes designed and studied for motorsport competitions.
The very first prototype will be a failure actually: in order to give maximum softness, Ciccio didn’t use seams, but only the glue to weld the parts together. Unfortunately he had to deal with high temperatures in the cockpit of the Alfa GTAs. So, during the free practice before the Targa Florio, Giunti was soon driving with low-cut shoes in several places. Anecdote aside, since the creations of Ciccio (regularly sewn rather than glued, as experience teaches us…) have become the favorite footwear of the most famous ace drivers. One of the very first pair of Racing Shoes signed Ciccio for the driver Nanni Galli
Among the drivers arrived in Sicily to compete in the Targa Florio, there was one in particular that needed handmade racing shoes signed Ciccio: Vic Elford. The English driver has indeed suffered the amputation of the big toe of his right foot as a result of an old accident. Francesco Liberto, although overworked, in front of that impairment, felt a moral duty to please the Porsche driver. Thus was a pair of shoes that will go down in history, preparing a left size 44 and size 42 but with a right foot sole 44 (European size, of course). An effort craft remarkable for more accomplished in a very short time, but that will pay off big: the day after, Vic Elford triumphed with Umberto Maglioli the Targa Florio, giving the Master of Cefalu the first of a log series of victories. A legendary victory for the history of the Targa too, as Vic in the final laps managed to fill a gap of more than 20 minutes at a couple Giunti-Galli, deserving a special place within the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart.
As the star of the Targa Florio seems well on its way to a sad but unavoidable Sunset Boulevard (impossible to adapt 72 km Madonie to increasingly stringent standards in terms of safety), the growing popularity of Ciccio knows an unexpected and sensational confirmation: a phone call received directly from Maranello won him the investiture to the role of official supplier to the Ferrari drivers Niki Lauda, Carlos Reutemann and Clay Regazzoni. So, in 1977 Niki Lauda became F.1 world champion wearing the famous Racing Shoes signed Ciccio Cefalu. Final consecration: at end of the season, Enzo Ferrari in person includes Ciccio in the acknowledgments together with all technical partners who have contributed to the success of Cavallino.
For the 40th anniversary of Maranello, during the event “All Ferrari in Sicily” the march of the Red pays tribute to the Master, stopping in Cefalu, just in front of his shoe shop, on the seafront of the wonderful Norman town. On that occasion, Antonio Ghini, Ferrari’s former communications director, delivers to Ciccio a somewhat unique gift: a piston taken from the original V12 engine of the Ferrari F1 used by Michael Schumacher during the 1997 season.
Today Ciccio Racing Shoes are more sought after than ever, because these handmade shos are now a true status symbol, the espessione of lifestyle, the icon of motorsport that healthy, pure and hard, that perhaps no longer exists but that people still love and regret. Now, as at that epic ages, these shoes are made personally by Ciccio Liberto, entirely by hand, “measure”, using only hides behind best choice and a clear demand from its loyal customers.
Shoes are available in two different models: the classic “Racing”, and boot top “Nivola”. You can order them in any color or combining two or more colors, both in fine leather and nubuck.
More, you can request a custom screen printing, to make your shoes unique and exclusive (in this case the template to use the boot is high, since it lends itself more to the personalization).
To order just contact Ciccio via email and send him the impressions of your feet drawing on a sheet of paper. Only advice: be sure to use the pen vertically and perpendicular to the sheet ….
Creation time: 8 working days for a normal couple, that can become up to 30 days in case of customization with screen printing, which is made in Milan at the Studio Cheli, set designers of the Accademia di Brera.
